Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford became attracted to acting in her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to complete her degree until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
